You’ll find examples of how we play with rocks all over this blog! Here are a few photos of the ways we play with rocks:

As you can see, we love incorporating rocks in small world play. In addition to being lots of fun for children (and adults), educators stress the many ways that small world play supports young children’s development. Here’s a good book about the topic:

Ward, Sharon. (2005). The Little Book of Small World Play. Featherstone Education.

If you want to play like this at home, you will need a few recipes.

Here’s the recipe we use to make brown play dough for small world play: https://saltthesandbox.wordpress.com/supporting-young-childrens-extremely-intensive-interests-a-work-in-progress/recipe-for-brown-play-dough/

Here’s our recipe for mock rock, which is kind of like hardened play dough with sand in it: http://www.saltthesandbox.org/rocks/mockrock.htm
